Who is Albert "Al" Rayl?? He is a friend of mine.
We got acquainted when we both were members of
Lt Col. C.V. Beimfohr's
Hunting Party into the Sudan in November/December 1962. Al is a
dedicated and avid big game hunter who loves the sport. He
managed to serve two (2) tours in the U.S. Army there and then came
back on a visit in 1969. In addition to his visits to Eritrea, he
made a safari into Kenya.
This Sub-Web is dedicated to him and his
photography. Click on the link below for Al's Biography
Al's Biography
I
was stationed in Asmara, Eritrea,
Ethiopia East Africa at the Naval Communications Station
Communications Station which was a part of the U.S. Army Base (Kagnew
Station). I had heard that a Lt Col. C.V. Beimfohr was getting
together a small group to go into the Sudan on a 30 day Safari. I
ask and was accepted into his party. That's where I met and became
friends with Al. Rayl. Members
of the hunting party were:
Lt. Col. C.V. Beimfohr, U. S. Army,
Captain Barry Ross, U. S. Army,
Warrant Officer Howard Riley,
U. S. Army
U S Army, Spec6 Alfred Rayl, U. S.
Army,
Chief Petty Officer, Freddie A. Ray,
U. S. Navy
Between us, we had four jeeps, and
three trailers. We were carrying three (3) fifty-five (55) gallon
drums of gas and one thirty-five (35) gallon drums of gas. Each
jeep carried as must as they could in gerry cans strapped to their
sides. My jeep had four (4) five gallon cans on the rear, four (4)
five gallon cans on the front bumper and one (1) each five gallon
can of water strapped to the sides just forward of each door. I had
two (2) spare tires. One on each side of the jeep just to the rear
of each door. In case of a break down, we had spare parts for each
jeep. (Tires, Axles, Springs, Motor Mounts, etc....). One trailer
was dedicated to our food.
We employed two Ethiopian's. One as
a Skinner and field taxidermist (Abdul Hassiem) and the other as the
cook. (Abbra Gari Salasi).
This and other
adventures of Al Rayl are depicted here in photographs and in his
Biography. Enjoy!
